Poetry Wednesday - At the Theatre
Poetry actually begun in a theatre (with universe imagery to connect with the Northern Lights phenomenon recently experienced)
Hello poetry people,
Apparently it’s Wednesday again, that’s snuck up on me and m sitting here at 12:30 will nothing prepared. Normally I’d have had once scheduled for you wonderful peeps a couple of days ago. Sol last night instead of diligently writing for you all, I went and spend 3 hours watching my son play in a rapid chess tournament where moves were made every 10 seconds on the sound of a very shrill buzzer. After the thrill of watching 20 people move their pieces in almost perfect synchronicity for a few moves, the initial wonderment and awe wore off and I started to fully realise what I’d let myself in for. I will hear that buzz for days to come and it wasn’t conducive to writing. (And also no internet so would have been reduced to working on my phone which my stubby fingers don’t like.)
I’d like to say I have a poem about chess or buzzers ready written for you, but, alas, I don’t as neither have that much of an interest for me. So, as the world has been abuzz (see what I did there? Buzz, abuzz - oo, aren’t I clever?🤪) about the Northern Lights phenomenon (which was very much visible to my naked eye and was gorgeous) I found a poem I wrote invoking the universe and star imagery, what could be more appropriate?
At the Theatre
spotlight caught
a dust mote
universe
swirls
overhead
more compelling than the acting below
undiscovered stars
worlds
galaxies
catch my gaze
and deliver
a story thrilling, yet silent
who can say which is more real?
This was draft written whilst sat watching Shakespeare. Now I love most Shakespeare but this was Titus Andronicus, I hadn’t seen it before, and I hadn’t realised beforehand that it’s actually rather boring in places. At times like these I tend to look around a lot and the spotlights often take my gaze. Strangely I can remember the seat I was in, the metal stanchion nearby, the metal spotlight casing, the beam itself, the swirls etc all far more enchanting than the acting that was happening below. Something I’m almost ashamed to admit as I bi-majored in English Literature at uni (along with Education) and Shakespeare was always one of my passions interests, to find one boring was a bit of a let down.
Anyhoos, that’s today’s poem, chat to me below about Shakespeare, theatre, chess, buzzing or even poetry.
Till next time.
