Hello All,
This is a photo of my sock drawer this morning,
It’s a mess and needs a good tidy, normally I have them all beautifully lined up and in ‘sets’. So at the top left are my first foray into men’s socks. Until I bought these I had not understood the quality difference between men’s and women’s socks. They have a lot less choice of colour and pattern but the wool is thicker. They do tend to be longer and so I have to fold the tops over old school fashion like. I liked the first set so much I bought a second. These are winter socks in the main.
Then bottom left we have an impulse internet buy 🤦🏼♀️ though they have lasted reasonably well, and the patterns are nice, they are gradually getting holes in and being recycled.
Then we have the section of doom. These are all women’s socks, and I only wear about 1/4 of them. In the main they are very thin and summer socks. There’s a pack of Studio Ghibli knockoffs I like, a couple of better quality ones I was sent (thank you Alison) that I wear, and quite a few that I am ambivalent about, they are either too thin, or twist when I wear them, or just feel ‘wrong’. The trouble is I can’t remember exactly what the problem is with each sock, so I’m now putting myself through sensory hell by wearing a different pair each day and making a decision as to whether they can stay or not.
I am very fussy with socks, it’s a sensory thing linked into my autism. The feel has to be right, they need to stay put, nothing a lot above the ankle, nothing below the ankle (I do own trainer socks, absolutely hate wearing them), seams need to be almost non existent and nothing on the edge of my toes. And it’s difficult to know what they will be like before you buy them, trying on socks is a little bit frowned upon in shops.
Today’s pair is that plain dusky pink pair on the top of that pile in the picture, they are already twisting and needing constant readjustment and are a bit scratchy. So they will go into the rags bag. Yesterday’s socks were very soft and striped, and I do like stripes, but twisted massively so they are in the same pile. I imagine I will end up with just the 1/4 left that I always wear, there has to be a reason I don’t chose the others, and for a sock lover that is appalling 😂.
So there we are, a little post about socks. Now, wasn’t that interesting and a bright spot in your day? 😁😂😁
Til next time.
You're right about men's socks. They are thicker and cushier, and thus cosier, which makes me happier. I've taken to living in women's hiking socks as they are the closest thing to men's socks but a better fit. They're not affordable though, especially the woollen ones, so I'm always on the lookout for a sock sale, haha.
I love your Nordic socks :)
I have similar sock struggles, and then I have sock guilt about getting rid of newer pairs. It’s complicated.
